Master links, also known as single master links or oval rings, are forged lifting components widely used in the lifting industry. They are designed to connect chains or other lifting elements and form a critical part of safe lifting systems. Master links are commonly used in combination with chains and connectors such as omega shackles.

Many oval master links feature a flat section in the centre of the forging, often referred to as the “flat.” This flat area is intentionally designed to allow lifting components such as omega shackles, special connectors, or adjustment hooks to slide easily onto the link and seat correctly. Although this flat section may sometimes seem inconvenient when the ring is tilted and a connecting component appears to catch, it is an essential feature that ensures secure and correct connection. Connecting components must always be positioned in the seating area of the link.

A single master link may be used to suspend one chain or up to two slings, provided the safe working load is not exceeded. The master link must always be selected with full awareness of the weakest component in the lifting configuration, as this determines the overall safe working load or working load limit.

Safety guidelines when using master links

  • Never clamp a master link onto a crane hook. The ring must be free to move and align itself naturally when the load is applied.

  • Avoid forcing or wedging a ring onto a hook, as this can cause deformation or failure well below the minimum breaking load.

  • Always select a master link that is appropriate for the load, configuration, and application.

Master links are essential elements in safe and efficient lifting operations. Correct selection, proper installation, and adherence to safety guidelines are key to maintaining a safe working environment and preventing lifting incidents.
